Vision technology

The combination of vision technology (image processing) and robotics is important in modern automation because it enables robots to “see” and thus gives them intelligent decision-making capabilities.

Why combine vision technology with robotics?

  1. Position detection and orientation
Robots can use cameras to detect where an object is located—and in what position or orientation.
Example: A robot detects that a part is lying at an angle and adjusts its gripping angle accordingly.

  2. Flexibility instead of rigid programming
Without vision, everything must be precisely pre-positioned. With image processing, robots can also handle parts that are lying in disorder (e.g., in “bin picking” or “reaching into the box”).

  3. Real-time quality control
Vision systems can detect errors before parts are assembled or packaged.
Example: Scratches, incorrect parts, positioning errors.

  4. Navigation assistance
Mobile robots (e.g., AMRs, drones) use cameras to orient themselves in space and avoid obstacles.

  5. Human-robot interaction
Vision enables the recognition of gestures, people, or safety distances – important for collaborative robots (cobots).
